Microsoft Teams fraud in China
Overview
Fraudsters in China have been utilizing Microsoft Teams to conduct ‘pig-butchering’ cryptocurrency investment scams. By leveraging the perceived trustworthiness of the business communication platform, scammers build rapport with victims through social or romantic connections to introduce fake investment projects. Reported individual losses have ranged from 1,500 to 300,000 USD.
In response to a surge in digital fraud and social engineering, Microsoft has implemented restrictions on the platform within China. Criminals reportedly invite victims to accounts under their control and subsequently revoke access to chat histories to hinder evidence collection by authorities. Following these incidents, Microsoft suspended access to the personal version of Teams on mobile devices in July and expanded these restrictions to the desktop version in August. Currently, only the corporate version of the application remains available in the region.
