Microsoft is officially removing the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) utility from Windows 11. While the underlying WMI architecture remains, the ‘wmic.exe’ executable is being phased out through updates, with complete removal expected by version 26H2. Recent developments confirm that WMIC is being removed from currently supported versions of Windows 11, starting with version 24H2. Unlike previous iterations where the utility could be re-enabled as a ‘Feature on Demand,’ it is no longer available as an optional feature in the latest builds. This follows a multi-year deprecation process that began in 2016 with Windows Server 2012. In the September 2026 update (KB5124008), Microsoft officially removed the tool, which had remained available as a Feature on Demand since its 2021 deprecation. Security experts highlight that the removal addresses a significant attack vector, noting that WMIC has been ‘frequently exploited by ransomware strains, such as TeslaCrypt 4.1b, WannaCry, and Serpent,’ to delete Windows Shadow Volume Copies and prevent file recovery. The tool has also been used to create exceptions in Microsoft Defender to hide malicious code. IT professionals and system administrators are advised to migrate legacy automation, batch files, and hardware inventory scripts to modern alternatives such as PowerShell, WMI APIs, or native Common Information Model (CIM) cmdlets to avoid operational failures. This transition occurs alongside the end of official free security support for Windows 10, which concluded on October 14, 2025. Due to hardware requirements like TPM 2.0 that prevent many Windows 10 machines from upgrading to Windows 11, some users are considering lightweight Linux distributions, such as Linux Mint XFCE, Zorin OS Lite, MX Linux, antiX, and Lubuntu, distributions to extend the lifespan of their hardware.
