Microsoft Xbox leadership transition

Overview

Helen Chiang, the first Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Xbox, has departed Microsoft after a 21-year tenure. Her exit occurred approximately three months after her promotion to the newly created COO role in July 2026.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the departure via an internal memo, stating, “Helen Chiang is leaving Microsoft today. I’m grateful for her years of service and I wish her luck.” While Microsoft and Xbox spokespeople declined to discuss personnel matters, some reports suggested the departure might be related to policy violations, though this remains unverified.

The role of COO was established as part of a major Xbox restructuring designed to unify content, hardware, platforms, and services. Chiang previously held major leadership positions, including overseeing Mojang and the Minecraft franchise. Her responsibilities will be distributed among other Xbox executives until a permanent successor is named.
