MicroStrategy digital credit and liquidity strategy
Overview
MicroStrategy (MSTR) has shifted its capital allocation strategy to prioritize its digital credit business and the development of its STRC preferred stock framework over traditional shareholder returns such as dividends and buybacks.
Following a period of significant institutional investment and a return to an unrealized Bitcoin profit of approximately $1.4 billion, the company has focused on strengthening its balance sheet. To support this, the firm has built a substantial U.S. dollar reserve and increased its liquidity significantly.
As of early September, the company reported that its dollar liquidity rose to $6.54 billion, consisting of a $5.10 billion USD Reserve for dividends and interest and $1.44 billion in USD Cash for capital management or Bitcoin purchases. This liquidity position is intended to provide approximately four years of capacity to meet financial obligations without selling Bitcoin holdings, as the company seeks to improve its B- junk credit rating.
