Migrant interceptions in Spanish waters
Overview
Spanish maritime and security authorities have conducted several operations to intercept migrant vessels in the Mediterranean and near the Balearic Islands.
In mid-October, coordinated efforts by Salvamento Marítimo and the Guardia Civil resulted in the rescue of 19 people of Maghrebi origin near Formentera and the interception of 101 people—including 14 minors—off the coast of Cartagena. Following these events, the Unified Association of Civil Guards called for more personnel and modernized equipment in the Murcia region, citing out-of-service patrol vessels.
By late October, further interceptions occurred in Formentera and Mallorca. Operations in Formentera identified three separate groups totaling 53 people of Maghrebi origin, while a separate operation near Portocolom, Mallorca, intercepted 23 people of Sub-Saharan origin. Data from the Ministry of the Interior indicates that 6,952 migrants have arrived at the Balearic Islands via 383 boats so far this year.
