Migrant settlement crisis in Ceuta
Overview
Following a mass influx of migrants in late July, the Tarajal industrial estate near the Ceuta border has transformed into a dense informal settlement. Originally a warehouse zone, the area now features makeshift shelters constructed from materials such as tires, pallets, and cardboard boxes, creating a landscape described as resembling a “favela”.
The settlement lacks basic infrastructure, including potable water, showers, and bathrooms. Residents, primarily Maghrebi migrants including women and minors, face extreme overcrowding and social tension within the labyrinthine paths of the community.
Living conditions have been further exacerbated by heavy rainfall. Migrants have reported sleeping in wet clothing and using plastic sheeting for protection. Concerns have also been raised regarding the safety of children and the elderly, as well as difficulties maintaining hygiene due to reported restrictions by military personnel on using the sea to clean belongings.
