The Balearic Islands continue to face a surge in irregular migration via small boats, primarily from North Africa. Regional authorities have reported significant influxes, including recent operations near Mallorca and Cabrera where the Guardia Civil and Salvamento Marítimo intercepted 66 migrants across three separate vessels. These recent interceptions included 26 Sub-Saharan migrants near Cap de ses Salines, 27 Sub-Saharan individuals southeast of Cabrera, and 13 Maghrebi migrants in the same vicinity. In a separate incident, 16 Maghrebi migrants were intercepted near the Cap de ses Salines lighthouse in a small fiber hull equipped with a disproportionately large motor to facilitate the route from Algeria. In response to the rising number of arrivals, particularly unaccompanied minors, the President of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, announced plans to expand provisional facilities at the former Son Tous barracks in Mallorca. Prohens noted that the islands are currently caring for 880 unaccompanied minors and criticized the central Spanish government for failing to adequately address the crisis, leaving regional resources under significant humanitarian and economic strain.
