Vicent Marí, president of the Consell Insular of Ibiza, initially warned of a potential migration crisis in the Balearic Islands, citing concerns that the islands lacked the resources to manage a sudden influx of migrants arriving via small boats, or ‘pateras’. Marí noted that the Algerian route had become a consolidated path and criticized the central government for allegedly withholding reports regarding the possibility of mass arrivals. Following these warnings, the Pitiusas islands, including Ibiza and Formentera, experienced a significant surge in irregular migration. In a single week, authorities intercepted at least ten boats carrying over 140 migrants, with projections suggesting total arrivals may exceed the previous year’s figure of 3,100. The influx has placed extreme pressure on social services, particularly in the care of unaccompanied minors. To address the demand for minor services, the relevant department budget was quadrupled to approximately 20 million euros. Local leaders have characterized the situation as ‘very worrying,’ stating that Ibiza is ‘totally overwhelmed,’ and have called for stricter border controls and the activation of Frontex. On a single Wednesday, the surge continued with 205 migrants arriving in the Balearic Islands. In Formentera, the Guardia Civil intercepted 17 migrants of Maghrebi origin at Playa de Migjorn. Earlier that day, Salvamento Marítimo, the Guardia Civil's Maritime Service, and the Fiscal and Border Section of the Port of Palma rescued 29 people of Sub-Saharan origin five miles south of Cabrera. Those rescued near Cabrera were reported to be in ‘apparent good health’.
