The center-left coalition in Milan is organizing primary elections to select a candidate for the 2027 mayoral race to succeed Beppe Sala. Initial preparations involved forming a group of twelve experts, known as “saggi” (wise men), to draft a charter of values and define political boundaries for the coalition. Within the Democratic Party (PD), discussions focused on whether to hold broad primaries or an internal selection among potential candidates such as Pierfrancesco Majorino, Anna Scavuzzo, and Lorenzo Pacini. By late August, the process evolved toward a projected primary window between January and February 2027. The field of potential candidates has expanded to between six and eight individuals, depending on the involvement of the Five Star Movement and Italia Viva. While Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein has declined to intervene directly to focus on national politics, organizational steps including the drafting of rules and a shared document of intent were scheduled to begin in September. The upcoming Festa dell’Unità in September is expected to serve as an initial political test for the involved parties. In early September, a strategic debate emerged regarding whether to prioritize a shared political program or the selection of a candidate. Mayor Giuseppe Sala proposed a two-step method, arguing that parties must first reach an agreement on shared programs to address divergences within the coalition, which includes groups ranging from AvS to Azione. Under this proposal, primary elections would only be held if a political consensus cannot be reached. Sala also emphasized that any primaries must be scheduled well in advance of the spring voting window to remain realistic. By early September, new tensions surfaced within the coalition regarding the selection process.
