Milan civil unrest and priest response
Overview
During violent student-led protests and civil unrest in Milan on October 17, which involved looting and clashes with police, Father Giannicola Maria Simone of the Church of Sant’Alessandro di Zebedia was filmed making an obscene middle-finger gesture toward a protester.
Simone, a 65-year-old priest, confirmed the authenticity of the video in an interview with Corriere della Sera. He stated that a young protester directed an offensive gesture toward him first, prompting his response. He maintained that he acted without violent intentions or the desire to escalate the situation, noting, “They’re kids, so I’m not surprised.”
During the unrest, Simone reported using the church to provide shelter for tourists and passersby seeking safety. He expressed that he does not regret his reaction, emphasizing that he did not commit physical aggression and had previously spoken with some of the youths involved.
