Developments in artificial intelligence for military decision-making have emerged across different sectors. In the United States, Smack Technologies secured $61 million in Series B funding to advance AI decision-making tools and wearable battlefield hardware, such as the ‘Alpha’ forearm display. This move follows a Pentagon strategy to diversify AI vendors after identifying certain providers as a “supply-chain risk”. Smack Technologies CEO Andy Markoff stated that the U.S. military is seeking decentralized AI capabilities to prepare for potential future conflicts in communications-degraded environments. The company is developing ‘Omega’, an AI software designed to optimize joint fires, ammunition prioritization, and target sequencing. Inspired by combat experiences in Mosul, the company plans to transition Omega from prototypes to a broader production rollout within the U.S. military. Concurrently, researchers at FOI in Kista are working on an AI-supported system to assist with tactical warfare decisions. While the technology can map multiple attack routes, military experts suggest it is not yet combat-ready and may not yet exceed human decision-making capabilities.
