The integration of artificial intelligence into military operations is accelerating, impacting wargaming, targeting, and decision-making processes. The Pentagon has awarded an $80 million contract to Code Metal to implement AI into the WarMatrix wargaming program, a move that experts warn could lead to “AI hallucinations” where models produce factually incorrect or nonsensical outputs.

Beyond simulation, AI is being utilized in active warfare to compress the time required for information gathering and analysis. Systems like Project Maven and platforms from Palantir integrate satellite imagery and drone footage to identify patterns and recommend targets. This shift toward algorithmic warfare has raised ethical concerns regarding civilian protection and accountability.

In conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, analysts have noted the use of AI-driven systems to automate the identification of individuals and infrastructure. In Gaza, AI has been utilized to automate the identification of targets, including individuals and civilian infrastructure. Investigations have also been prompted by specific incidents, such as an attack on a school in Iran that killed over 170 people, to determine if AI played a role in target selection.

Experts caution that the opacity of these systems may create a false sense of objectivity and prioritize state violence over civilian safety, potentially triggering a global arms race in autonomous technologies.
