Overview

Research from the University of Washington suggests that irregularities in stellar streams orbiting the Milky Way may be caused by the galaxy’s own complex gravitational field rather than by dark matter.

Astronomers have traditionally interpreted gaps, kinks, and clumps in these long, thin trails of stars as evidence of invisible dark matter subhalos passing nearby. However, simulations of approximately 15,000 stellar streams across four Milky Way-sized galaxies indicate that realistic galactic gravity can produce similar structural variations, such as bends and wiggles, even without dark matter encounters.

The study, published in The Astrophysical Journal, found that after five billion years, only about 70 of the 15,000 simulated streams remained featureless. These findings suggest that the Milky Way’s inherent gravitational irregularities can mimic the effects previously attributed to dark matter, complicating the use of star streams as a reliable tool for mapping the substance.
