Governor Mateus Simões announced the removal of removed former state secretary Marcelo Aro from his cabinet, accusing Aro him of using spending four years parasitizing the government for to build a personal political project and signaling of negotiating a 2026 gubernatorial run candidacy that would pit him against challenge Simões. The ouster altered the coalition balance, reducing weakened the influence of União Brasil and the PP and reshuffling commissioned positions. Later within the same day, former coalition, prompted a reshuffle of commissioned positions and may affect alliances with smaller parties such as Podemos and Republicanos. Former governor Romeu Zema publicly denounced Zema, who had backed Aro as a traitor for abandoning a prior agreement to seek a Senate seat with Zema’s backing. Zema reaffirmed seat, denounced the move as a betrayal and reiterated his support for Simões’s re‑election, while Simões echoed disappointment, calling Aro a “parasite.” Simões. Zema said the shift could allow “politicians sold” to damage Minas Gerais and announced he will attend the PSD state convention on 2 August 2026, where Simões’ re‑election bid will be formalised.
