Mine Rescue Competition in Rize
Overview
The 4th Mine Rescue Competition, organized by the Turkish Miners Association (TMD), was scheduled to take place in Rize, Turkey, from September 22 to 25, 2026. Hosted by Çayeli Copper Operations Co. and supported by local government entities, the event was designed to enhance occupational safety culture and emergency response capacities within the mining sector.
Thirteen professional rescue teams from major Turkish mining companies participated in the competition, which featured six categories: underground, fire, earthquake, chemical response, vehicle accidents, and team competency. While underground and earthquake modules were conducted at the Çayeli copper mine site, other modules were held in public areas of the Rize city center.
Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Abdullah Tancan described the event as a vital platform for solidarity and training to improve disaster response capabilities. The competition also included international observers from Azerbaijan, Greece, South Africa, and Zambia.
