Mining accidents and instability in Potosí, Bolivia
Overview
The Potosí mining region in Bolivia has experienced a series of fatal accidents involving falls from significant heights and structural collapses. In late September, multiple workers died at various sites, including the Unificada mine, the Santiago Bajo R. L. cooperative, and the 9 de Abril cooperative in the Cerro Rico area. These incidents, which included a 100-meter platform failure, brought the regional mining fatality count for the period to 120.
By early October, the death toll rose to 121 following additional fatalities at the Caracoles section of the Unificada Cooperative, the Porco mining center, and the 20 de Octubre Cooperative. Beyond individual accidents, the Cerro Rico massif is showing signs of severe structural instability. A dense cloud of dust rising from the summit has indicated the potential for new sinkholes or collapses. The area, a UNESCO World Heritage site in danger, contains 153 identified sinkholes, with 28 currently active, resulting from centuries of silver oxide extraction.
