Mining accidents in Nariño, Colombia

Overview

On October 19, 2026, a landslide at an unauthorized open-pit gold mine in the El Chambero sector of Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé, Nariño, killed at least 14 people and injured seven others. Most of the deceased were women, many of whom were heads of households. The remote location, accessible only by boat or small aircraft, and the presence of armed groups like the Jacobo Arenas Block complicated rescue operations.

By October 24, the National Mining Agency (ANM) confirmed the death toll and noted that recovery efforts faced significant logistical difficulties. Data from the ANM indicated that between January and October 2026, Colombia recorded 88 mining emergencies resulting in 148 fatalities, 52 injuries, and 69 rescues. Of these recorded emergencies, 31 occurred during unauthorized activities.
