Overview

The July 2026 ICMM analysis showed that about two‑thirds of global mining sites face serious water‑related risks, especially baseline stress and drought. Early incidents have already illustrated those vulnerabilities: heavy rains in Chile caused tailings spills at Las Cenizas and Los Pelambres, prompting emergency water supplies for nearby villages, while abandoned illegal mines in Colombia’s Santurbán páramo continue to discharge acidic drainage.

Later that month, further disruptions emerged. In Chile, the rural towns of La Ligua and Los Vilos cut off tap water after nearby tailings contaminated local supplies. At the same time, illegal mining in the Santurbán páramo recorded tunnel water with an average pH of 3.2, indicating long‑term acidity risks. Chilean operators are responding: Minera Collahuasi reports a 40 % reduction in fresh‑water use through recycling, yet its activities still affect soil infiltration and agriculture. Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, draws over one billion cubic metres of water annually, representing more than a quarter of global copper output, highlighting the scale of water demand in the sector.
