On January 24, 2026, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive-care nurse at a Veterans Affairs facility in Minneapolis, was shot and killed by Customs and Border Protection agents during a federal immigration-enforcement operation known as ‘Operation Metro Surge’. Initial reports from the Department of Homeland Security described the incident as a ‘violent riot’ and labeled Pretti a gunman. However, video evidence later contradicted these claims, showing Pretti—who held a Minnesota concealed-carry permit—never drew his weapon. Footage indicates Pretti was recording the scene, attempted to help a woman who was shoved into him, and was wrestled to the ground before agents opened fire. Further evidence suggests an officer removed Pretti’s legally permitted firearm while he was on the ground shortly before approximately 10 shots were fired. They also criticized President Trump for labeling Pretti an ‘agitator’ and ‘insurrectionist’ on social media, describing the remarks as ‘unpresidential.’ The Department of Justice has since opened a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting, involving both the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.
