The Misiones Legislature has now unanimously repealed the articles that would have prohibited glyphosate use starting in 2030. This reversal was driven by concerns regarding export risks, specifically following warnings from the Tea Association of the USA Inc. The association indicated it would cease importing tea if the province substituted glyphosate with bioherbicides lacking international certification, noting that without established import tolerances, treated tea could be classified as “adulterated.” The United States currently imports approximately 66% of Argentine tea. Meanwhile, the push for the “Yerba Mate Emergency Law” continues in the provincial Chamber of Deputies. The proposal aims to allow the provincial executive to set mandatory minimum prices for green leaf to protect family-run farms and ensure production costs are covered following the loss of national price-regulation powers.
