The Norwegian‑flagged bulk carrier Misje Verde collided with a 7–8 m leisure motorboat near Tjörn on 28 July 2026, pulling the small vessel under the ship and causing it to sink. Divers recovered The collision resulted in the boat, finding two fatalities – deaths of a mother and her young daughter – daughter, while the father and son survived with serious injuries. Swedish prosecutors, led by senior prosecutor James von Reis, placed the ship’s Russian captain in pre‑trial detention on suspicion of negligent causing death, citing a risk of flight. The harbour pilot who was aboard the cargo vessel at the time has also been formally charged with two offenses; he has been assigned defence attorney Thomas Håkansson, denies wrongdoing and is cooperating with police. Legal experts note that criminal charges against a pilot are rare, emphasizing that ultimate navigational responsibility rests with the captain. Following the accident, Norway’s maritime authority conducted an unannounced inspection of Misje Verde in Kvinesdal. Inspectors identified breaches of crew‑rest regulations, shortcomings in work organisation, labour‑condition issues and technical defects that must be remedied before the vessel can sail again. Shipowner managing director Roald Misje said the company will review the report and implement the required measures. In the ongoing investigation, the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority has retrieved data from the vessel’s voyage recorder. This includes navigation data, bridge audio recordings, radar data, and technical system settings. Investigator Björn Ramstedt stated there are “good hopes” that the analysis will explain the causes of the accident, specifically whether the ship failed to maintain a proper lookout or was traveling at an excessive speed.
