The defendants, a Russian captain and a Swedish pilot on board the Norwegian-registered cargo ship Misje Verde, face charges of manslaughter, causing bodily harm, and negligence in maritime traffic. The accident occurred in Hakefjorden on 28 July 2026, when the Misje Verde, traveling at approximately 12 knots, collided with a recreational motorboat. Although the small vessel was clearly visible on the ship’s radar, the crew failed to notice the collision course. The impact caused the motorboat to sink, resulting in the deaths of a mother and daughter, while a father and son were rescued from the water. During the proceedings, the father of the victims provided emotional testimony describing the moment the cargo ship’s bulb struck their vessel and his attempts to reach his children. Additionally, the father’s brother, who was in a separate boat nearby, testified regarding the proximity of the large vessel during the incident. Both the captain and the pilot continue to deny all criminal charges.
