Misleading yogurt and food labeling practices

Investigations into yogurt and fresh food labeling have revealed that manufacturers often use misleading packaging to hide high sugar content and artificial ingredients.

In France, an investigation by 60 Millions de consommateurs found that products often use natural fruit aromas instead of actual fruit pieces, despite packaging featuring suggestive imagery of fruit. The report also noted that sugars are often masked under names like glucose-fructose syrup or fruit juice concentrate, with some fruit yogurts containing over 15 grams of sugar per 100 grams.

Broader research indicates that labels such as ‘natural’, ‘low-fat’, or ‘no artificial ingredients’ can be deceptive. In the case of low-fat yogurts, manufacturers frequently add sugar to compensate for the loss of fat and maintain consistency. Some varieties have been found to contain over 45 grams of sugar per cup, and flavored yogurts in UK supermarkets have averaged a 12 percent total sugar content, exceeding World Health Organization recommendations. Experts suggest that plain Greek or full-fat yogurts may be more reliable nutritional choices than processed low-fat or protein-labeled alternatives.
