Investigations are focused on several key factors. Authorities are reviewing bloodstains found on the stern and an ‘enigmatic note’ discovered on the boat. While the wife maintains the blood was from the fish, investigators are examining the circumstances of the fall and the vessel’s movement. Experts have noted discrepancies regarding the boat’s trajectory, suggesting that if the vessel had drifted unpiloted for three days, currents and winds should have moved it further from its intended destination. Questions have also been raised regarding emergency protocols; although the wife holds a sailing license, officials are questioning why SOS systems were not activated or why the engines were not immediately neutralized.

On August 28, Italian authorities officially terminated the search operation, which utilized the Italian Coast Guard, Frontex aircraft, and commercial vessels. The search, centered approximately 120 to 150 nautical miles southeast of Cape Spartivento, yielded no findings. The decision to end the operation has met with strong opposition from the family. Mutilba’s son, Sergio, expressed disappointment with the Spanish government, claiming the family has not received sufficient institutional support, and is calling on Spanish authorities to intervene to continue search efforts.
