Major League Baseball (MLB) has officially abandoned plans to host a regular-season game within Grand Teton National Park. The decision follows intense opposition from the local community and conservationists. In a letter to the Teton County, Wyoming Board of Commissioners, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred stated that the league would cease evaluating the park as a potential venue because ‘it has become clear the local community does not want us to continue evaluating Grand Teton National Park as a potential site.’ The proposal had involved MLB exploring the feasibility of a game similar to the ‘Field of Dreams’ series in Iowa. While National Park Service Deputy Director Frank Lands had scouted three potential locations for a ballpark and facilities, the White House clarified that the initiative was driven by the league and was not a presidential directive or an administration priority. No permits were ever issued by the National Park Service. Throughout the exploration phase, the plan faced criticism from the National Parks Conservation Association and local officials, such as Teton County Commissioner Luther Propst, who called the idea ‘a radical departure from the tradition of national parks.’ Concerns centered on wildlife management for species like grizzly bears, bison, and elk, as well as the potential impact of construction on the preservation of natural sanctuaries. Commissioner Manfred clarified that the league was conducting initial due diligence and had not yet reached the stage of evaluating environmental impacts or soliciting community views. He emphasized the league’s stance by stating, ‘We obviously would not bring a game to a community that has concerns about the venue, and will not continue to evaluate Grand Teton National Park as a potential site.’
