Mobile data connectivity and international travel safety

Overview

Research indicates that mobile data connectivity is increasingly viewed as a critical component of international travel safety. A study commissioned by eSIM provider Saily found that 29% of travelers across eight surveyed markets, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, expressed safety concerns regarding a lack of connectivity.

Specific demographics showed varying levels of concern; younger travelers and women were more likely to feel vulnerable without internet access, whereas travelers aged 45 to 54 reported higher confidence traveling offline. In Australia, 32% of international travelers reported feeling somewhat or very unsafe without mobile data, a rate among the highest globally.

Saily CEO Vykintas Maknickas noted that travelers rely on data for essential functions such as navigating, accessing boarding passes, translating languages, and contacting emergency services or family. To mitigate risks, experts recommend downloading offline maps, saving emergency details locally, and carrying power banks.
