While acknowledging that mobility tests like hand grip strength and sit-to-stand challenges provide valuable data on stamina and fall risks, experts such as Auriel Willette of Rutgers University caution against viewing them as “definitive predictors of longevity.” Instead, declining results are recommended as prompts for medical investigation into functional changes rather than as direct tools to gauge remaining lifespan. A collaborative study by researchers from the Universidade Federal de São Carlos and University College London, published in GeroScience, has furthered this research by linking handgrip strength to walking speed. The study suggests that a 15 percent drop in handgrip strength can predict a decline in walking speed in older adults. Researchers emphasize that tracking personal strength trajectories is more effective than relying on static clinical thresholds, such as the traditional cutoffs of 27 kg for men and 16 kg for women. To combat sarcopenia and maintain independence, experts recommend that strength training for seniors focus on gradual progression and proper technique.
