Following the May 16 attack in Modena where Salim El Koudri drove a vehicle into a crowd, killing Monica Esposito and injuring seven others, investigations have focused on the suspect’s mental state and potential extremist ties. Initial forensic investigations revealed that El Koudri conducted extensive online searches regarding firearms, jihadist attacks, and figures such as Osama Bin Laden. While investigators found no evidence of direct contact with terrorist organizations, the victim’s family sought terrorism charges based on his capacity to understand his actions. In subsequent court proceedings, psychiatric experts Matilde Forghieri and Giuseppe Sartori concluded that El Koudri possessed the capacity to understand and control his actions during the incident. Although experts noted he exhibited ‘narcissistic fragility’ and a history of mental health issues, they determined these conditions did not compromise his legal responsibility or his ability to comprehend reality. Defense attorneys have contested these findings, characterizing the event as a ‘raptus’. During an evidentiary hearing, experts noted that while El Koudri exhibits feelings of hatred and anger, his symptoms were not severe enough to impair legal responsibility. Recently, El Koudri, who faces charges of massacre, attempted suicide in prison by ingesting medication. He was transported to a hospital and is reported to be out of life-threatening danger.
