MOL wind-assisted LNG carrier development
Overview
Mitsui O. S. K. Lines (MOL) has announced the naming of the FUJIN SAILOR, the world’s first LNG carrier equipped with the Wind Challenger wind-assisted propulsion system. The naming ceremony was held on September 10, 2026, at the Hanwha Ocean Geoje shipyards in South Korea.
Developed through a collaboration between MOL, Chevron Corporation, and Hanwha Ocean, the vessel utilizes two Wind Challenger hard sail units to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The ship features a cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic metres and is powered by an ME-GA low-pressure LNG dual-fuel engine, supplemented by an Air Lubrication System and a Shaft Generator.
The vessel is scheduled for delivery to Chevron in late September 2026 under a long-term charter. MOL has expressed intentions to expand this technology, targeting 25 equipped vessels by 2030 and 80 by 2035.
