In July 2026, Moldova accelerated several key transport works. On 15 July, a €37 million full-capacity renovation of the Salcia Mare bridge on road R32 began. A week later, on 24 July, the National Roads Administration issued a tender for a €35 million access road to the new “Podul de Flori” bridge at Ungheni. On 29 July, the government adopted a law to streamline authorization for large-scale transport projects. Infrastructure improvements continued into August. On 5 August, the state railway CFM received a capital increase of over 421 million lei (≈ €21 million) to rehabilitate the Tighina–Basarabeasca–Etulia–Giurgiulești line. This funding, drawn from EBRD and EIB commitments, is earmarked exclusively for infrastructure and cannot be used for operating expenses. Vice-prime minister Vladimir Bolea noted the investment enhances Moldova’s role in the Black Sea region, while Prime Minister Vasile Tofan estimated that grain transit fees could generate up to $60 million in revenue. On 10 August, authorities announced the completion of a €9.25 million rehabilitation of the R8.1 national road. Following negotiations regarding Additionally, a rail transit corridor, 34.44 million lei project began on the R22 road in the Telenești district to replace a bridge over the Ciulucul Mic river, involving a temporary bypass near Zăicani. Following negotiations, Moldova and Ukraine signed an economic agreement on 12 August to facilitate the transport of Ukrainian goods via the Moldovan railway network. Effective from 10 August through the end of 2026, Moldova is offering a 50% reduction in fees to attract transit. Ukraine plans to transport up to 6 million tons of goods during the 2026 agricultural year, with Moldova aiming to capture approximately 10% of that volume. However, the agreement has met resistance from the Farmers' Force Association and Agrocereale. These groups Agrocereale warn that reduced tariffs and increased transit could lead to a shortage of wagons and terminals for local producers, cause railway infrastructure congestion, congestion and potentially crash depress domestic grain prices. Concurrently, Ukraine has requested a €220 million subsidy from the European Union to assist its farmers, who are farmers facing challenges from drought and Russian military attacks.
