In early August 2026, Moldova announced a plan to raise defence spending to 1 % of GDP by 2030. The announcement coincided with 2030, alongside a municipal bond launch, a visit by Latvia’s foreign minister, and statements about ensuring on water supply and railway losses. A few days later, on On 5 August, the Moldovan cabinet approved a concrete modernisation programme for the National Army, allocating more than 10 billion lei. The five‑year plan targets equipment upgrades, infrastructure improvements and overall capability enhancements to meet the 1 % GDP goal. The approved actions also aim to integrate Moldova more closely into the EU’s security architecture, strengthen bilateral and regional defence cooperation, increase participation in peace‑keeping missions and enhance the country’s contribution to regional security.
