The National Office for Cultural Development (ONDC) in Moldova has launched a national competition to select a city to represent the Republic of Moldova for the ‘European Capital of Culture 2033’ title. Cities and municipalities of any size are invited to submit applications by October 4, 2026. Minister of Culture Dan Suruceanu has emphasized that the competition is open to all locations, regardless of population size, provided they demonstrate sustainable management and a long-term cultural development vision. This initiative occurs as neighboring Romania prepares for its 2034 designation. Under a new European Commission framework, future designations will place greater emphasis on youth participation, civil society, and cross-border projects, shifting the focus toward long-term legacy rather than just annual events.
