The Moldova State Tax Service (SFS) began issuing notifications to vehicle owners regarding unpaid road use taxes for 2026. These notices targeted owners of personal vehicles with biennial technical inspection cycles who had undergone inspections between June 1 and December 31, 2025. The notifications included vehicle-specific data and QR codes for payment via the MPay electronic service. Following online speculation that the notices were fraudulent, the SFS confirmed the authenticity of approximately 85,000 notifications. The agency clarified that a total of 84,974 notices were issued, representing a tax value of approximately 102.6 million lei. The SFS emphasized that the road tax must be paid annually, regardless of the frequency of technical inspections. Sent via Poșta Moldovei, the notifications include the vehicle's identification number (VIN), year of manufacture, and the amount due. The SFS noted that owners who have already paid the 2026 tax may ignore the notice. In the event of a vehicle sale, the obligation to pay falls to the new owner if the tax was not settled at the time of the transaction.
