Moldovan airport concession corruption trial
Overview
Prosecutors in Moldova have requested prison sentences for several former officials involved in the 2013 concession of Chișinău International Airport. The Anti-Corruption Prosecution Office alleges the concession was orchestrated to benefit a criminal organization, causing a loss of over 392 million lei to the state by reducing the state's profit share from 8% to 1%.
During judicial debates, prosecutors requested six-year prison terms for former Prime Minister Iurie Leancă and former Economy Minister Valeriu Lazăr, among others. Other defendants face requested sentences between five and six years, along with potential bans on holding public office.
In their final statements, Leancă and Lazăr pleaded not guilty and requested acquittal. Leancă characterized the charges as “fabricated,” though he acknowledged having used the private aircraft and vehicle of Ilan Șor while in office. A verdict is scheduled to be announced on November 30, 2026.
