Moldovan leu fluctuations and banking sector updates

Overview

The National Bank of Moldova (BNM) reported currency fluctuations regarding the Moldovan leu. While the leu saw a slight increase against the euro, it experienced a significant decrease against the US dollar, losing more than 9 bani against the greenback.

Recent reports from the BNM indicate that approximately 95% of banking sector assets are managed by banks with European ownership. Governor Anca Dragu stated that the sector is “well-supervised, liquid, and robustly capitalized,” noting that alignment with European standards through SEPA integration enhances investor confidence.

Marking one year of operational connection to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), the BNM highlighted that the system has become the primary channel for euro cross-border transactions, with nearly 80% of such transactions conducted via SEPA. This integration has reportedly saved citizens and businesses over 16 million euros through faster and lower-cost transfers.

Regarding ongoing currency trends, the leu has shown mixed performance. As of October 6, the leu appreciated slightly against the euro, with the official exchange rate set at 20.084 lei, but continued to weaken against the US dollar, which was set at 17.9297 lei.
