Overview

In late July 2026, Moldovan officials marked the 34th anniversary of the Transnistria peacekeeping operation by calling for the current militarised mission to be replaced with a civilian international one. Vice‑Premier Valeriu Chiveri argued that armed personnel and equipment give the false impression of an ongoing conflict and that a civilian mandate would better support reintegration.

A few days later, Moldovan authorities highlighted that the country’s constitutional neutrality, adopted to bar foreign troops, has not led to the withdrawal of Russian forces from the breakaway region. Analysts and officials noted that the neutrality clause has failed to provide security guarantees or compel Moscow to pull its troops, and the government continued to demand their removal at international forums such as the OSCE.
