Seven municipalities in the French Mont Blanc region have proposed new regulations to manage rising tourism levels and mitigate environmental and safety impacts. Local officials noted that visitor numbers for the 170-kilometer hiking route have reached approximately 90,000 per season, leading Jean-Marc Peillex, mayor of Saint-Gervais, to state that the era of an ‘open bar’ for unregulated tourism has ended. The proposed measures focus on organizing access rather than imposing total bans. Key initiatives include a ban on wild camping, stricter rules against feeding wildlife, and requirements for hikers to use trekking backpacks instead of rolling suitcases or heavy luggage transport. A new charter is expected to be finalized by the end of 2026, with implementation slated for spring 2027. Under these rules, hikers will likely be required to provide proof of accommodation reservations at hotels, refuges, or official campsites to help manage overcrowding on the Tour du Mont Blanc. As authorities prepare for the 2027 rollout, plans include the creation of a dedicated squad to monitor trail compliance. The rising visitor numbers, which grew from 60,000 in 2022 to 90,000 this summer, have resulted in saturated refuges and unauthorized camping on private land. These developments have sparked debate in Italy’s Valle d’Aosta. While the Tour du Mont Blanc remains a vital economic resource, local leaders, including the Mayor of Courmayeur, are discussing the distinction between healthy growth and the negative impacts of overtourism.
