The Montenegrin banking sector has demonstrated growth in both digital payment adoption and overall financial indicators. Following the launch of a new instant payment system on July 20, 2026, Montenegro recorded 56,678 successful transactions by the end of July. Andrija Jovović, Director of the Payment Services Sector at the Central Bank of Montenegro, noted that users have responded positively to the speed and simplicity of the service. Data from the Central Bank of Montenegro also indicates broader expansion within the banking sector during the first half of 2026. Total bank assets reached 8,050.16 million euros, an 8.61% increase from the previous year, while total approved loans rose by 12.35% to 5,803.54 million euros. The credit-to-deposit ratio increased to 0.96, with the majority of credit claims held by the general population and the resident non-financial sector. Recent economic trends show varied developments across other sectors. Foreign direct investment (FDI) reached 457.3 million euros from January to July, with Serbia remaining the primary source of capital for the banking and real estate sectors. However, political figure Boris Mugoša highlighted a shift in investment structure, noting that productive investments—those creating jobs and new knowledge—have fallen to just 15% of total FDI, while real estate investments have risen to nearly half. Additionally, the insurance sector experienced a surge in private health insurance, with gross premiums reaching 6.17 million euros in the first seven months of 2026, a more than 40% increase over the previous year. Meanwhile, Monstat reported that while building permits increased in the second quarter of 2026, the total number of planned apartments decreased significantly.
