Montenegrin designers are utilizing fashion to explore and preserve national identity and cultural heritage. In Budva, Milena Đurđić presented a fashion show titled ‘Svjetlo nad kamenom’ (Light Over Stone) in front of the Old Town walls. The event, which featured 50 creations, was designed as a narrative journey through Montenegrin history, exploring themes of origin, struggle for freedom, and the nation’s future to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Montenegro’s independence. Đurđić’s ‘Svjetlo nad kamenom’ collection features both men’s and women’s designs that bridge Montenegrin heritage with contemporary global trends. The collection utilizes architectural forms and contrasting textures, transitioning from structured, military-inspired urban pieces in earth tones to fluid silhouettes made of silk, satin, georgette, and muslin in intense blue and light tones. Following this, designer Marina Banović announced an exhibition at the Museum of the City of Podgorica as part of Montenegro Fashion Week. Banović’s work focuses on integrating contemporary design with Montenegrin and Balkan folk elements, such as hand-woven materials and ancient embroidery. She describes fashion as a ‘living archive’ that serves as a witness to social and cultural history.
