Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić has addressed various challenges regarding the nation’s relationship with the European Union and regional security. Initially, Spajić denied reports that Montenegro was negotiating with the EU to host migrant reception and repatriation centres. Responding to claims that Italy had listed Montenegro as a potential site, the Prime Minister described such reports as “unfounded” and stated the government would reject any such proposal, emphasizing that Montenegro remains a reliable partner in border protection. Later, the Prime Minister warned of coordinated hybrid activities intended to destabilize the country and obstruct its EU accession process. Spajić indicated that security intelligence suggests these efforts involve officials from at least two regional countries and are supported by certain domestic political actors and media. These threats are expected to coincide with the opening of new EU negotiation chapters. Additionally, allegations surfaced regarding a high-ranking official being influenced by criminal structures to create political instability. Recent developments clarify that these suspected hybrid tactics include political and economic pressure, disinformation, and cyber activities. While the Prime Minister’s office has not officially named the regional nations involved, reports suggest the countries in question are Serbia and Albania. Montenegro is currently working toward a goal of joining the EU by 2028, having already closed 18 of the 33 required negotiation chapters.
