In early August 2026, Monterrey experienced two separate violent road incidents that drew public outrage and prompted police investigations. On 4 August, a traffic dispute on Avenida Fidel Velázquez and Bernardo Reyes escalated when a driver accelerated, dragging a 50-year-old woman, Abyeni Judith Ortiz Maya, for about 30 metres before she fell. Bystanders provided first aid and authorities opened an investigation, searching for the driver of a silver Nissan Sentra. Three days later, a violent incident occurred on Avenida Ruiz Cortines in the Victoria neighborhood. Surveillance footage from the C4 municipal system captured a young man, later identified as Héctor Iván “N”, approaching an elderly pedestrian on the sidewalk and making forceful contact with his shoulder. This caused the victim to lose his balance and fall into the roadway, where he was struck and killed by a passing refreshment-transporting double-trailer. Following a search, Monterrey police apprehended Héctor Iván “N” on Diego de Montemayor Street. At the time of his arrest, he was wearing clothing similar to that seen in the video, and authorities reportedly recovered substances resembling drugs from his backpack. He has been placed at the disposal of the Fiscalía General de Justicia de Nuevo León for investigation. New details from the investigation into the Ruiz Cortines incident indicate that the event was initially reported as a traffic accident. However, a 12-second video shows the suspect, wearing a white shirt and shorts, striking the victim with his shoulder before fleeing on foot. The suspect reportedly attempted to briefly grab the victim’s hand before departing. The driver of the trailer appeared to continue driving, seemingly unaware of the incident. Both events highlighted concerns over aggressive behavior and road-safety culture in the Monterrey metropolitan area, leading to calls for swift justice and stricter enforcement.
