In late July 2026, Morocco officially renamed its 1,055-kilometre Tiznit-Dakhla expressway the “President Donald J. Trump Highway,” honoring the United States’ 2020 recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. The $1 billion project, completed in 2025, links the north with the southern provinces, including the Dakhla Peninsula, and is expected to cut travel times by three hours for cars and five hours for trucks. King Mohammed VI formalized the renaming in a letter dated 2 July 2026, and the decision was made public in early August 2026. President Donald Trump thanked the king on Truth Social on 26 July, calling the honor “a great honor” and expressing a wish to travel the entire route. Moroccan officials reiterated the symbolic value of the naming, noting its link to the 2020 U.S. decision that also facilitated Morocco’s normalization of relations with Israel. The highway is part of a broader infrastructure push in the region, which includes 1,300 kilometers of expressways and upcoming projects like the Dakhla Atlantic Port, slated to open in 2028. As of 2025, Morocco has completed a highway network exceeding 1,800 kilometers. This expansion includes wind farms and tourist complexes intended to stimulate logistics and investment.
