Morrow battery factory bankruptcy and acquisition efforts

Overview

The bankruptcy of the Morrow battery factory in Arendal, Norway, has triggered significant political and economic developments. Following the company's collapse, Sylvi Listhaug of the Progress Party called for a parliamentary investigation by the Standing Committee on Scrutiny and Constitutional Affairs to examine the massive state subsidies provided to the firm. Government estimates suggest public contributions through loans and project funding reached between 2.3 billion and 3.4 billion NOK.

In response to the bankruptcy, the bankruptcy estates of Morrow Batteries ASA, Morrow Technologies AS, and Morrow Industrialization Center AS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the American company Lyten, Inc. and Innovasjon Norge. This agreement concerns the potential sale of Morrow’s ongoing business operations. Lyten has reportedly paid 8 million NOK to secure exclusive negotiation rights to maintain temporary operations. The proposed sale aims to secure approximately 70 short-term jobs and potentially protect hundreds of long-term positions and local supplier contracts.
