On October 9, 2026, an explosion occurred at the Motor Oil refinery in Agioi Theodoroi, Greece, during scheduled preventive maintenance on heat exchangers in unit U-607. The incident involved a gas decompression that ejected a metal cap but did not trigger a fire. The explosion resulted in the deaths of two Albanian nationals, Robert Cakaj, 43, and Dorian Hysa, 50, both of whom suffered severe traumatic brain injuries. Greek authorities arrested a 59-year-old external contractor, a 36-year-old foreman, a 50-year-old Health and Safety manager, and a 34-year-old project operator on charges related to causing an explosion and public danger. On October 15, a second explosion occurred at the refinery's Corinth facilities during maintenance on a high-pressure exchanger in unit 750. The blast, which occurred while an external crew was performing welding tasks, was reportedly caused by a sudden and violent release of gas or steam. No fire was reported. Four workers were injured: two Greek employees, aged 40 and 59, sustained serious injuries including burns and multiple fractures and were placed in intensive care, care at Thriasio Hospital, while a 28-year-old Greek man and a 48-year-old Slovenian man sustained minor injuries. Following the Corinth incident, authorities confirmed three arrests, arrests of six individuals, including a 62-year-old contractor, a 63-year-old contractor employee employee, and a 46-year-old Motor Oil employee. A 62-year-old contractor was also brought in for questioning. In response to the recurring incidents, Motor Oil has suspended all preventive maintenance and shut-down activities until October 19. The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) condemned the event as an ‘employer crime,’ and the Labor Inspection Body is conducting an on-site investigation.
