The Mount Jack wildfire near Sooke, British Columbia, has expanded from an initial two-hectare blaze discovered on September 20 to approximately 276 337.23 hectares. The fire, which is suspected to be human-caused, was has been driven by warm, dry, and windy conditions. Following recent rainfall, the BC Wildfire Service reported that fire behavior reduced to a “smouldering ground fire with no open flame,” categorized as Rank 1. As of September 26, the wildfire has been was classified as “being held.” Approximately held,” with approximately 65 personnel, including ground crews and helicopter support, have been personnel working to expand containment. By September 29, the wildfire was officially listed as “under control.” Officials stated the fire is not expected to spread beyond its current perimeter. Approximately 60 firefighters, including heavy equipment operators and aviation resources, continue to work on expanding containment and cooling heat areas inward from the perimeter. While the fire does not currently pose a threat to structures, critical infrastructure, or public safety, local authorities closed access to portions of the Galloping Goose Capital Regional Trail and District has maintained precautionary closures for Kapoor Regional Park as a precaution. and the northbound Galloping Goose Regional Trail at the Spring Salmon Place Campground.
