Overview

Following a landslide on January 22 that killed six people at the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park, an independent review by former High Court Judge Paul Davison concluded the tragedy was “preventable”. The report found that while consultants had identified landslide hazards on the specific slope for over two decades, the risks remained unmanaged due to systemic failures within the Tauranga City Council.

In late July 2026, new geological instability was detected at Mauao, with approximately 8,000 m³ of earth shifting. This fresh regression, characterized by new cracking and groundwater emergence, prompted the Tauranga City Council to maintain safety closures for Adams Avenue and the Pilot Bay boat ramp under Level 3 restrictions.
