Mount Shasta search and rescue operations

Overview

Multiple search and rescue operations have occurred on Mount Shasta involving stranded hikers facing extreme conditions.

In mid-October, two hikers from Salt Lake City were rescued after spending 36 hours lost in the Avalanche Gulch area. The pair, a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, became trapped in a steep river canyon at high altitude after their phones died. They were located in the Cascade Gulch area by various agencies and sustained no injuries.

Shortly after, a 39-year-old man from Florida was rescued from the Whitney Glacier after falling into a crevasse. The hiker, who was reportedly ill-equipped for overnight conditions, suffered a severe leg injury. Rescuers faced 60 mph winds and freezing temperatures during a large-scale operation involving approximately 30 personnel, eventually extracting the man via helicopter.
