Mountain View immigration detention moratorium
Overview
The Mountain View City Council has passed an “urgency ordinance” to prevent the establishment of immigration detention, custodial, or processing facilities within the city limits. The measure implements an immediate moratorium on the filing, acceptance, and approval of applications for such facilities to “preserve the status quo.”
While the ordinance is initially set to expire on November 27, the City Council retains the authority to extend the moratorium for an additional 22 months and 15 days. During this time, city staff will evaluate potential impacts and explore regulatory options via land use and zoning changes. The policy excludes routine law enforcement, medical facilities, schools, and judicial hearing locations. Although no U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers currently exist in Mountain View, officials described the action as a proactive measure to close potential loopholes.
