The Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) continues to face internal leadership tensions and external criticism. Stefano Bandecchi previously attacked the movement, labeling their rhetoric as “infantile and sterile” and accusing them of “buffoon politics.” Internal friction has escalated due to the return of founder Beppe Grillo to the media spotlight. In an interview on the Pulp podcast, Grillo criticized the party for being in a state of “ideological paralysis” and characterized Giuseppe Conte as a leader who “whispers to technicalities,” or operates like a “reverend” through bureaucracy. Grillo warned that the movement is heading toward “extraordinary chaos.” While initial speculation suggested Grillo might launch a new political project using modern technology and artificial intelligence, Grillo has since dismissed these rumors. He stated that he lacks the power and organizational capacity to found a new movement, though he remains open to contributing ideas on the environment, religion, and the economy. However, he maintains that he has been “estromesso” (sidelined) and that the M5S is no longer the entity he and Gianroberto Casaleggio originally envisioned, describing it now as a “normal party.” He suggested that Giuseppe Conte should perhaps establish his own distinct political symbol. Grillo has recently clarified his stance, stating, “I am not finished with politics, I am exhausted by politics.” Despite his claims of exhaustion, this, his return to Rome to meet with loyal former parliamentarians and party officials has signaled a potential renewed engagement with political affairs. These tensions are compounded engagement. Furthering these tensions, Grillo launched a sharp attack against the M5S-led regional government in Sardinia, headed by an unresolved legal dispute regarding Alessandra Todde. In a blog post, he accused the ownership administration of exploiting a 2021 regional law—which he termed the party’s name “poltronificio law”—to assign numerous high-paying external consultancies and symbol, with a court hearing in Rome scheduled for January. Meanwhile, staff positions, contradicting the domain name ‘Movimento zero stelle’ has been purchased by a private professional in Aosta as a speculative investment. movement’s founding principles.
