Mozambique is hosting various literary initiatives to recognize national authors and stimulate reading culture. A National Literature Contest, launched by President Daniel Chapo and managed by the Ministry of Education and Culture, set a submission deadline of September 11. The contest, which commemorates the 50th anniversary of independence, offers four million meticais in prizes across categories including Poetry, Children and Youth Literature, Narrative Fiction, and Literary Essays. Following the conclusion of the submission period, approximately 500 entries have been received from various regions. The contest features a prize pool where 1 million meticais will be awarded to the winner of each of the four categories. Beyond monetary rewards, winning works will be edited and published for national distribution. A jury has commenced a technical screening process to verify that manuscripts adhere to requirements regarding genre, theme, and page count. To ensure integrity, the Ministry of Education and Culture, in coordination with the National Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (INTIC), will utilize specialized software to detect the unauthorized use of Artificial Intelligence. Any works proven to be generated by AI will be disqualified. Separately, the fourth edition of the Mia Couto Literary Prize has announced ten finalists in the Poetry and Short Story categories. This competition, promoted by Cornelder de Moçambique and the Kulemba Association, received 63 submissions. Winners for the Mia Couto prize are scheduled to be announced on October 8 in Beira.
