Mozambique business credit expansion initiatives

Overview

Efforts to expand credit access for businesses in Mozambique have progressed through new funding initiatives and policy dialogues. Initially, the Sociedade de Garantias de Moçambique (SGM) sought new financing to expand its Mutual Guarantee Fund, which utilizes a US$120 million allocation from the World Bank to support micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). The SGM aimed to mobilize additional resources to reach a long-term goal of financing 15,000 domestic companies.

Following these efforts, the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA) and the Bank of Mozambique established a new 18-month financing mechanism. This regime allows commercial banks to deduct amounts from their mandatory reserves equivalent to new credits granted to businesses that contribute to import substitution or increased exports. This initiative utilizes the Mutual Guarantee Fund to mitigate risks and aims to stimulate credit for the private sector.
